A Summer Story from Halima…

My summer can be summed up in three words: memories, growth, and lessons. My name is Halima. I was born in Washington, DC and have lived in Maryland all my life. I attend Prince George’s Community College. I came to know about DayBreak through my older sister who told me about the summer internship program. After praying about it, I applied and now after the 5 weeks of the summer camp I can definitely say it’s been an experience.

One of the ways in which I saw God work this summer was one afternoon during recess. The kids were outside playing and one of the girls had time out because she had been being mean to another one of the girls. I was sitting under a tree and she was sitting next to me. Her teacher came over and said that she wanted her to read a Bible story during her time out. The girl frowned and said she didn’t want to read it. I told her I would read it with her and she seemed a little more willing to read it. We read the Bible story together, which was one of Jesus’ parables about being kind to others. After we read the story we prayed together and I asked her what she should go do now. She replied that she should go say she was sorry for being mean to the other girl. She did and went off to play. The next day I came across the same girl about to say something mean to another kid. I gently reminded her about what we had talked about the day before. She immediately remembered we had talked about being kind to others. So instead of continuing to be mean to the other kid, she stopped. It was neat to see how the kids actually do listen and take to heart some of the lessons they learn, and to see how God is working on their hearts. I’ve learned a lot and have loved working with the kids of Lincoln Heights this summer.
