What We Do
DayBreak strives to come along side the residents in the community and empower them to live full lives for Jesus Christ. We do this through consistent and sustainable programs such as a daily after school program, tutoring, mentoring, and Saturday outreaches. In addition, we create large outreach opportunities to share Christ’s love in both word and deed to the community with events such as a back-to-school carnival, thanksgiving outreach, and an annual Christmas store.
Our after school program partners with parents and teachers to enrich the academic lives of children in grades 1st – 5th and help them progress in reading and math. In addition, the after school program introduces the children to Jesus Christ and allows them to study and explore God’s Word.
Twice a week, students who participate in the after school program are paired with a tutor in a one-on-one relationship to receive help with homework and grow academically and spiritually. Tutors spend an hour with their assigned child each week focusing on the child’s educational goals but also developing a relationship of trust with that child. The tutor not only plays an important part in the child’s academic achievement but also has the opportunity to share their faith and lives with the child.
Our mentoring program is where the biggest impact is made. Mentoring is designed to impact both the students being mentored and the student’s family. Mentors build intentional and caring Biblical relationships with the child and family serving as a resource and friend. DayBreak mentors are paired one-on-one with a student to develop a long-term, on-going relationship consisting of spiritual enrichment, teaching, and encouragement.
Twice a month, a group of volunteers open the DayBreak facility during the weekend to welcome children ages 5 – 12 for our Saturday outreach. These outreaches are similar to a mini-vacation Bible school where the kids learn about who Jesus is, how much our God loves them, and are shown that love through committed volunteers from the DC area. Open to any child in the community, Saturday outreaches provide children in the community with a fun activity for the day while also teaching God’s Word and learning valuable life lessons. Saturday outreaches allow us to reach kids who are not involved in regular programming to share the love of Christ with them and hopefully begin a relationship with them.
In addition to our on-going programs, DayBreak seeks to provide opportunities and resources to all individuals in the community. Through our back-to-school carnival we equip children with the necessary items in August to prepare them for the school year and have games, prizes, and food for the whole family. At Thanksgiving, we provide over 300 turkey dinners to residents of Lincoln Heights and Richardson Dwellings. And, then, at Christmas, we open a Christmas store to families in the community to purchase donated Christmas gifts at discounted prices so they are empowered to care and surprise their children with the gifts they desire on Christmas day.
With so many different types of programs currently happening at DayBreak anyone can volunteer. Please consider the commitment you would like to make and contact us at DayBreakInfo@McLeanBible.org to get involved today! Trust us, God will bless you more than you can ever imagine!
